Hosted by the Korean Church of Boston (32 Harvard St, Brookline, MA 02445), this festival extends a warm invitation to all residents of Brookline and neighboring communities. The festival will consist of two parts. The first part (5:00pm-) will feature a variety of activities, and attractions, including Korean food tasting, traditional hanbok dressing, calligraphy, and an introduction to K-pop, which has been making waves recently. The second part (7:00pm-) will feature Korean traditional dance, music performances, K-pop dance, and taekwondo demonstrations to provide a high-quality cultural experience.  The Korean Church of Boston is celebrating its 70th anniversary this year and has been organizing and hosting various events. The Korean Cultural Festival will be the culmination of this year’s program. As the oldest Korean church in the New England region, the Korean Church of Boston has been actively involved in and contributing to cultural and educational activities in Brookline and the surrounding area. This festival was organized as an opportunity to showcase of the diversity and the richness of Korean culture, as well as to give back to and show appreciation for the welcoming and caring community that the church has been blessed with over the years.  As such, this year’s festival is themed as “Sharing Gratitude with our Neighbors.” It acknowledges that the small community of the Korean Church of Boston has been able to settle and grow together in this area because of the welcome and care of the Brookline community. Through the festival, the church aims to share gratitude and promote fellowship with its neighbors. The event is free of charge, and everyone who wants to join in and have fun will be welcome. This festival will be a great opportunity to enjoy a time of fellowship with neighbors while sampling the richness of Korean culture. Korean Cultural Festival Boston 2018

Humans are bound together through shared cultural ancestry. We intuitively understand and respect the evolution of cultural diversity through time. However, the era we are currently in is a landscape fractured by income- and ethnic- divides driven by false information and partisan arguments telling us what to believe and how we should live. The theme of this year’s festival is “The Sound of Two Hands Clapping”, a contrarian reference to the famous puzzle from the East, “what is the sound of one hand clapping?”. Enlightenment through the long and solitary meditation about such a riddle is great, yet the world poses pressing problems that can be solved only through multiple hands working together – the universal sound of the liminal space collapsing between the pair of hands coming together is that of Approval, Encouragement, “Eureka”, Harmony and Joy. It is in this spirit that a great number of hands come together to clap, present and share delicious food, enact the traditional wedding ceremony, dance and recite poetry as well as experience the exquisite music performed by illustrious musicians DoYeon Kim (Gayageum – the Korean string instrument), gamin (Piri, Taepyonso and Saenghwang – reeds instruments), Youmi Cho (Soprano), and an elite ensemble of NEC/Berklee musicians.
